Deadheads for Obama
Wednesday, 02 July 2008

Deadheads for Obama Everyone who knows me from years past knows I was a major Deadhead.  Maybe not like my brother-in-law who saw Dead shows from coast-to-coast, but I did a fair number of shows in my life (35 shows in all).  All I can say is, "I am a Deadhead and I support Obama!"

Let's change America and restore it's shine!  Let's be inspired to do what is best and what is right for America!

A Suiting Tribute
Wednesday, 25 June 2008

George W. Bush Sewage Plant This has to be one of the most fitting tributes ever!

I wish I was living in San Francisco right now so I could vote on this issue.

A group in San Francisco, which call themselves the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco, is asking voters to sign a petition to have a nearby building named after George. The building they'd like to honor Bush with is none other than the water sewage treatment plant on the nearby coast. And the name? They'd like to have it called the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

I think this is priceless.

The renaming would take effect on Jan. 20, when the new president is sworn in. And regardless of the measure’s outcome, supporters plan to commemorate the inaugural with a synchronized flush of hundreds of thousands of San Francisco toilets, an action that would send a flood of water toward the plant.

George CarlinGeorge Carlin has passed away.  A true comedic genius.  I can only imagine the afterlife with him and Lenny Bruce tearing it up.

This is for you George.

Philly 2008

Good Flemish Sour! The former USPRO race is upon us again and I am VERY excited!  Well.... perhaps pretty excited about the race and very non-excited about the 97 degree weather we can expect!  That does not sound fun.

  Cry

I have to say that I am looking forward to seeing my father, Monk's Cafe , and Lemon Hill this year.  I just hope that we don't melt like lemon sorbet in the sun.

I have been going to Phily for the USPRO race for over ten years.  It may no longer decide the next US Cycling Champion, but places like Manyunk and Lemon Hill are just as spectacular.  On one or two occasions I have not made it due to car issues or situations beyond my control.  I will say this, it should be a great day.  And if it get's too hot out there, there is always Monk's Cafe or even the Museums of Philly.  Regardless, I am looking forward to having some rest and relaxation and spending time with loved ones.  It is great to combine the two great loves of my life into a special weekend and share cycling with the most amazing fiance a man could ever hope to have.

Big Legs
Wednesday, 04 June 2008

How do you put on your pants?Remember how your mother used to tell you "They put on their pants just like everyone else"?

Well Ukraine’s Yuri Metlushenko recently won a bicycle race during a series of bicycle races in the North East, better known as "Philly Week".  Let's just say, I don't think Yuri puts his pants on "just like me".  I think this boy wears a lot of parachute pants.  Queue in the music because I think "It's Hammer Time!!!"  Somehow I bet MC Hammer is still touring and he is really big in the Ukraine.

I will say this... he's one big boy.  I just can't wait to see him try and haul his behind around the course at Philadelphia.  I can imagine that his team and Slipstream will both have their hands full getting their big riders up the Manyunk wall.

This guy has some meat on those legs.  I can only imagine his training routine.  Then again, I can imagine his tailor.  Years ago another cyclist, Eric Heiden , had similiar size legs.  His tailor had him buy pants with a waist 6-8 inches larger then he needed to accommodate his legs and would then shrink the waist.

It must be all the McDonalds that he is eating which makes his legs so strong.  Sealed

Designer of Pringles can is buried in his invention
Monday, 02 June 2008

All of eternity in this cramped space? It is amazing how some us are remembered... or for that matter choose to be remembered.  The following story you just can't make up.  How do I wish to be remembered?  Perhaps as a good person who did good, made the world a better place.  I also wish to be remembered as a loving husband to my wife to be Debbie and, g-d willing, a wonderful father.  Above all though a wonderful person who was not buried in a Pringles box.

The man who designed the Pringles can had part of his cremated remains buried in one, his family says.

Fredric J. Baur, of Cincinnati, died May 4 in Cincinnati, his family said. He was 89.  Baur's children said they honored his request to bury him in one of the cans by placing part of his cremated remains in a Pringles container in his grave in suburban Springfield Township.  The rest of his remains were placed in an urn buried along with the can, with some placed in another urn and given to relative

Big Exciting News
Monday, 26 May 2008

To those of you who read this blog (which means you are not my family or long time friends) you know that I have been sharing my life with an amazing woman since October 2007.  This person completes me and makes me happier in ways that I never knew were possible and for which I love her with every fiber of my being.  It is actually quite hard to articulate how much I love this person and how happy I am sharing my life with her.

I love sharing my life with her so much, in fact, that I have asked her to share the rest of her life with me and be my wife.  Yes indeed, Jason asked his finance Debbie if she would marry him.  I suppose I could tell you more about this in detail on this website, but you can read much more about it here (http://wedding.jasonherman.com).

I cannot recall a time in my life that I have been this happy or so perfectly complimented by such a parter.  Debbie is the most compassionate, sweet, tender, intelligent, thoughtful, and beautiful partner and spouse any man could hope for.  More than a spouse or "significant other", she is a partner and a perfect compliment in life.  I look forward to spending a life together with her and making her as happy as she makes me.

I had always wondered where my beshert(באַשערט) was and now I have found her.  In yiddish bashert translates to "perfect match", fate or destiny.  I truly believe that this woman is my beshert and I am over the world happy that I found her.

I found a truly wonderful person who is more precious than all the rubies in the world.  Best of all, she wants to spend her life with me too.

OK... feel free to talk amongst yourselves now! Wink

PS:  She only had one minor edit to this entry.  I'm getting better!

Status Update Memorial Day 2008
Monday, 26 May 2008

Hey everyone!

It has been a while since I have posted an update (one person even harrased me at Happy Hour about it -- a big shout out to TLO).  The past month has been pretty busy, filled with a lot of activity.  The good stuff I will post in a separate post only because it deserves a entry all of it's own.

I am very happy to report that my healthy issues seem to be behind me.  The CAT scan showed no abnormalities.

It is just strange getting to that age where all those things that you say "I'm not old enough to have this happen to me" can actually happen. It has been a weird mind shift to have to think "yeah... that could be something".

Thanks to everyone who has provided all that great support to me over the last two months!  -  Jason

PS:  This is for a separate blog entry, but my new fiance now helps edit my blog entries.  Behind every great writer is an even better copy editor. Tongue out

Mmmmm... smoothie time!
Tuesday, 13 May 2008
Mmmm.... smoothie! So much has been going on in life and almost all of it is very very good! I am still so very much in love, as a matter of fact, more so than ever. It's a good thing... actually a GREAT thing! I am grateful for every second of life and the happiness that goes along with it.

For the past year or so I have had some GI problems and I finally realized that instead of self diagnosing I would actually go ahead and get some medical advice. So today I go in for a wonderful C|T scan just to make sure everything is OK. Thankfully my friend Brad told me how awful the Banana flavor is. Instead will be having the Berry flavor.... lucky me!

< Banana Smoothie is a 2.1 % w/barium sulfate suspension taste barrier with a great new flavor and consistency that patients can actually enjoy. It is ready to administer, quick to transit, and provides excellent visualization of the entire GI tract.

I am going to be fine. It's just one of those things that you do in order to make sure everything is OK. I suppose I will have to let you know how great this new flavor is. I think they should caveat this statement with 'it tastes great compared to the crap you used to have to drink'.

I'm still in love with the world, and madly in love with the girl. Nothing but smiles here for me!

UPDATE @ 2pmI have to admit, it isn't that bad. They have made real progress since I last had one of these 8 years ago. Much tastier than Pina Colada. I do have to preface that with, the aftertaste is still 'ewww' in character. However, given the taste from years ago, it was pleasant. Or at least bottle 1 of 2 was.

Eddie Again!
Friday, 02 May 2008
Eddie Izzard Stripped! It was some months ago that I went to see Eddie Izzard honing and performing what would eventually be his 'Stripped' tour. It was a fantastic show that I saw and tonight I am going to see him perform the tour version of his material.

I am very excited to see this show. The best part is that much of the material found in this show is used by me and my girlfriend(P) (An Army reference for those of you who may understand this...) use on a daily basis. So much so in fact that it has been woven into the fabric of our relationship and something that brings me many smiles and laughs! If you can find tickets, I highly recommend seeing Eddie! He is fantastic!

Tie...GRRR!Life is truly fascinating and an adventure.

I suppose I need to explain, but perhaps you already realize this yourself.

Life is filled with love and laughter, triumph and tragedy. Sometimes these events are dispersed and sometimes intertwined. That is just the nature of life.

Today I am excited to celebrate the life of someone who means the entire world to me. This person not only makes me smile from the inside out but gives me a full body smile. I feel alive from head to toe and I owe it all to this person.

Thank you for everything.

One last thing... Tie-GRR

Yes, to the casual observer this must be highly annoying not knowing who and what I am talking about. Can I use anymore pronouns? I will try too :-D

Doug Epilogue
Sunday, 27 April 2008
It's for you DougMy life has been very good lately and a little sad. I still miss Doug and I am saddened that he is no longer amongst us. I know that he made the world a better place and people were just happier know him and knowing that he was around us. I can say this, when I have biked lately I understand what Lance Armstrong once said when paying tribute to a fallen teammate Fabio Casartelli. He said that on the day he rode to victory in the Tour de France he did so with the strength of two men. When I biked last week I thought of Doug often and could just feel more strength than I had in a long while.

More than just feeling stronger physically, I felt sharper mentally. With the loss of Doug it just helped me solidify the feeling that we must truly savor and cherish life... take nothing for granted... and realize that we don't know what tomorrow brings and appreciate the here and now. This is not to say that I don't have long range plans, ambitions, and goals, but I do realize that the only moment we can truly live in is this very moment. The past is behind us and frozen in time, and the future has yet to come. The only moment we can truly live in is this very moment.

And you know what, I am living in the moment, and I cherish the memories I have of people that have passed, I look forward to a bright future ahead, and I love the moment I live in and those that I spend these moments with.

Your life was a blessing, being a friend of yours was a tremendous pleasure, and your memory still guides me.

SFC Douglas Flatt

SFC Douglas Flatt
SFC Douglas Flatt: You will be missed my friend.
Today I found out that a good friend of mine, Doug Flatt or SFC Douglas Flat passed away yesterday.

I work in a US Army building and come into contact and work with many US soldiers. , and Douglas Flatt was one of those who stood out and I became friends with. Several years ago I met Flatt. He was a kind, mild mannered, intelligent, and all around great guy. Our friendship grew over the years and we always had lots to talk about including computers, technology, divorce, dating, and where we thought we would be in a few years. Flatt had only a handful of years left in the service before he could retire with full benefits. He was the same approximate age as me and we just had so many great stories to share with one another. We often joked and considered how it would be when he worked for my company, CoreSys, and he could work for us out of Fort Knox, KY. You see, in a few years the US Army Command that I support will be moving down to Fort Knox, KY and not everyone wants to go down there.

Flatt loved KY and was originally from Louisville, KY. Several months ago he bumped into me in the hallway with great excitement telling me how he was transferred to Fort Knox. He was just so excited, and that usual smile on his face was just that much bigger that day! Over the last few weeks of his assignment in Virginia I would keep on bumping into him and his smile just got bigger, almost Cheshire cat like. I last saw him what seems like a few weeks ago. In fact, yesterday I wondered what the weather was like down in KY. I knew I was going out on my bicycle yesterday and for some reason wondered how Flatt was doing in KY.

It is with a heavy heart and weepy eyes that today I found out that while I went on a beautiful bicycle ride, my friend of 3.5 years Doug Flatt was killed while riding his motorcycle. Parallel moments in life I suppose.

I still think about how excited he was to be going back home to KY and how full of life this kind man was full of. He leaves behind a new wife and four small children. I have met two of his children over the years and watched them grow. My heart goes out to his family and all that knew him. If you knew Flatt you knew how great of a man he was. So full of life, so much warmth, such a great smile and that slight southern/Kentucky accent saying "hey bud!".

I can say that it was a great pleasure and great honor to know such a person. May his life and his memory truly be for a blessing.

I miss you Doug. You were a great person, a great friend, and I wish you peace. Your memory is a blessing.

Saul Raisin Helping U.S. Military members that sustained Traumatic Brain Injury

This year I have been truly blessed, and blessed more than I would have ever expected. I was thinking how could make the world a better place (as I usually do). A friend of mine, Saul Raisin is fully recovered from a traumatic brain injury and is looking to make the lives of other's who have been injured better through the formation of the Raisin Hope Foundation. In fact, he is hoping that this becomes a major foundation and can take a life of it's own. This is the same guy who whopped Lance Armstrong on his last training ride, so why can't this organization also be just as big as the Lance Armstrong Foundation?

Saul will be in Washington, DC, on May 4th at the US Air Force Cycling Classic. They have chosen the Raisin Hope Foundation as the beneficiary. I know, it's the Air Force, and for those who know that I work for the US Army. All kidding and petty in fighting aside, the Foundation, the Race, Saul, and I would like to help out US Military members with TBI. The number is way too high, and this is becoming amongst the most common problem facing our soldiers. I wish they were not in harms way, but they are, and we owe it to them to help out!

Make this Passover great, and make sure to show love not only for those around those at the passover table, for those the world.

Happy Passover 5768

Passover 5768A very happy passover to everyone!

I have to say I am very excited about passover this year. This year has been a wonderful year for me filled with many new experiences, wonderful moments, and an uplifting of the spirit. I reflect where I was in life last year and where I am today.

Last year I had a wonderful seder with my small family. It was truly amazing as each of us was able to bring a small story, or our own personal experience to the seder table and share it with one another. It was also amazing as one person even knew the chanting tunes to sections of the haggadah which my family had only read until then. There were so many stories to share and so much joy in the room. Passover is a time to remember our time of affliction and slavery, but also about freedom and celebration. I am very happy to remember last year's seder and think of the joy and celebration in my family and rebirth and renewal.

I am especially looking forward to this year's seder. I am celebrating in a new town, with a new surroundings, new adventures, and new loved ones. I look forward to reflecting and celebrating with a new family. I do have to say that as much as I am enjoying the enriching flavor of my religion in the fabric of my being, I am not doing the Fast of the First Born today. Nope... but I will reflect upon the importance of it.

PS: Although this is not the most traditional seder plate, I am strangely and strongly attracted to it. Feel free to buy me one for yourself, or me if you must. It's only $200!

Yes... I'm Still Here... and Passover is right around the corner
Wednesday, 16 April 2008
JasonHello everyone. I am still here. It is funny, for a while there were new stories and events that kept on inspiring me to post. The fact is, there remain a lot of things that go on throughout the day that continue to inspire and influence me, but none that are overly 'blog worthy'.

Know this, I continue to be happy beyond my wildest dreams and savor each and every day. A smile steadily appears on my face and I am grateful for everyone in my life.

I am very excited that in a few days I will be attending Passover Seders. While I have been to many seders in my life, and have even hosted a few myself, I am really looking forward to this one. No... not because there is any hope of cheese grits... but it is because this seder will be with someone I care very deeply for and it will be with her family and family friends. I look forward to life with steady optimism and a certain smile on my face.

And lastly remember... They Tried To Kill Us (We Survived, Let's Eat)

Celebration of Beer
Monday, 07 April 2008
St. Bernardus Prior 8Breweries and beer lovers around the country are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the return of beer on April 7, 1933, as the Prohibition era was drawing to a close. Prohibition was well intentioned (so they say) but I am even happier that it came to an end. At the time I don't even think American's knew how good Belgian Beer was.

I know this is not American beer, but I highly recommend going to 't Brouwershuis if you are ever in Belgium. It is worth the trip and the owner, Bernadette Claus-Deconinck, is amazing! Book your tickets to Watou, Belgium

Toys to Dream About

Nice Red Toy!I have wanted to blog about a really nice Espresso maker for the longest time. This desire has probably gone back for some time now, probably November. There have been just so many things to express here other than an adult toy which I wan't. Positive message, stories of hope, courage, green technology. So many important things. The past few days I find my mood a little more dark as I have been disappointed in the actions of our chief decision makers. I am disappointed that wiretaps are done without regard for the constitution, people believing that torture is above the law, that the EPA can ignore global warming.

Enough of that though, let's talk about something on the level of simple wants. Years ago my friend Mauro from Canarsie, Brooklyn, promised me a Espresso maker for my birthday. He is 1st generation Italian immigrant and to him Espresso is no laughing matter. Since then I have always wanted one of those retro espresso makers to have in my kitchen. Come on... look at this beautiful espresso maker. Looks nice eh? I am very fortunate to have met someone with great design taste. I can imagine this in a future house that we both live in.

Let's face it... we all have wants and desires for material items. I am no exception. My current espresso maker works just fine but one day I hope to have something this aesthetically pleasing in my house. Who knows... maybe I will even get it in the predominant blue to match the Kitchen Aid.

Global Green Solutions
Tuesday, 01 April 2008
ImageI just came across Global Green Solutions and what they are trying to do. It sounds just amazing how all these companies are coming up with astounding ways to create Green Energy. Many of these companies are making true green solutions and not buying carbon offsets or doing Green PR so they don't feel so guilty about hurting our planet.

Global Green Solutions is using algea to make biofuels. It is amazing that the slime and sludge that we normally think is "icky" could make so much fuel. Watch this video about their new VertiGro solution. It is how the video ends. Imagine taking 1/10th of New Mexico which is already a wide open unused range and being able to make fuel for all of America.

You may say I am a dreamer... but I am not the only one..... -- John Lennon

Passing Strange
Monday, 17 March 2008
Passing StrangeThis past weekend I went to see Passing Strange on Broadway. It was a tremendous show which was very powerful and energetic. Best of all, we wound up with front row tickets which was amazing. I have never seen a show so close up that you see spit coming from the actors mouth or see every bead of sweat actually come out of the actors pores. It was amazing to view the play from a perspective that is normally reserved for professional photo angles. The play was amazing and everyone should see it! This production was originally an off-broadway production and the cast members are very excited about their first Broadway appearance and their enthusiasm and exuberance showed. Look for this play come Tony time. There are even rumors of appearances on some nationally televised programs as the excitement is growing. The cast was really stellar and I enjoyed each and every person's presence on the stage. Most of all a family friend, Rebecca Naomi Jones, is one of the stars of the show and it was tremendous to see her so in her element, so happy, and so enthusiastic about the experience. Good things happen to good people and it was truly a blessing to see someone who is such a wonderfully warm and great person and takes such pride in her craft to have this success!
